Rooted in the stones of Kotor

Tucked into a small square inside Kotor's UNESCO-protected Old Town, Karampana takes its name from the historic well that once gathered the whole neighborhood — a place of meeting, story and gentle news.

We kept that spirit. Guests arrive through narrow stone lanes, cross a hidden courtyard, and sit down where centuries of Kotor's evenings have already been lived — softly, unhurried, together.

Our cuisine follows the coast: olive oil pressed from nearby groves, fish from the Bay of Kotor, herbs from the hills above the walls. Techniques are classic; the produce dictates the plate.

Everything is prepared to be shared slowly, alongside a considered list of regional and natural wines that belong to this sea and these mountains.

The Legend

The Karampana Well

Karampana is one of Kotor's most treasured landmarks and the city's famous medieval well. For centuries, it was the main source of fresh drinking water inside the Old Town, making it much more than a well — it was the heart of everyday life. Locals gathered here to collect water, exchange news, share stories, and catch up on the latest gossip.

According to local legend, a sea fairy named Karampana left the people of Kotor a single spring of fresh water after turning all the others salty. Whether history or folklore, the well remains a symbol of community, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Kotor.

A popular local saying captures its importance: “If it wasn't said at Karampana, it didn't happen.” In many ways, Karampana was the medieval version of today's social media — a place where everyone came to hear what was happening in town.
